Upnor is a small village located in the county of Kent in South East England. It is situated on the River Medway, just downstream of the town of Rochester and upstream of the town of Gillingham. Upnor has a population of around 1,800 people, and is part of the Rochester upon Medway urban area.

The area has a long and rich history, and was first mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086. It was originally known as Uppenore, and was a part of the manor of Hoo. The village was owned by several different families over the years, including the de Reinbolds, de Malses and the de Upnor families. Upnor was a small fishing village until the 1500s, when it became more of a naval site. In 1559, Queen Elizabeth I ordered the construction of Upnor Castle, which was used to protect the Royal Navy ships that were moored in the Medway.

The village grew and prospered in the 1600s, when it was home to a thriving shipbuilding industry. Upnor Castle was used as a base for the Navy to protect shipping from attack by Spanish and Dutch ships. The village also had several pubs, inns and a variety of shops.

In the 1700s, the village was the home of the Upnor Pottery. This pottery was especially renowned for its creamware and earthenware, which was exported all over the world. The pottery was in production until 1836, when it closed down due to competition from cheaper foreign imports.

The village of Upnor also has a fascinating maritime history. In 1667, during the Dutch wars, a Dutch fleet of ships managed to sail up the River Medway and attack Upnor Castle. This attack was known as the Raid on the Medway, and it was the most significant naval battle of the war.

In the 19th century, Upnor became a popular tourist destination. People would come to enjoy the scenery of the River Medway, as well as to visit the castle and the pottery. It was also a popular spot for boating and sailing.

Today, Upnor is a pleasant, quiet village which still has a strong connection to its maritime past. It is home to several pubs, including the Upnor Castle Tavern, and there are a few shops and cafes in the village centre. Upnor is also home to a Church of England Primary School, and a well-used community centre. The village is a great place to take a walk, as it has some beautiful walks along the banks of the River Medway.
